A speech therapist (SLHT) is a profession that clarifies the nature and mechanism of communication problems with "words" and "hearing", conducts examinations and evaluations, and provides tailored training, guidance, advice, and other assistance. is.

SLHT's support activities range from children to the elderly, ranging from delayed language development, voice and pronunciation disorders, hearing disorders, swallowing and eating disorders, higher brain dysfunction, and aphasia.

The national qualification of a Japanese speech therapist dates back to 1971 when a professional staff training center was established at the National Center for Hearing and Language Disorders (currently the National Rehabilitation Center for the Physically Handicapped). It became a national qualification in 1997, and it is necessary to pass the national examination and obtain a license from the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare.

About 1,500 people are qualified as speech therapists every year. In 2015, the total number of qualified personnel was about 25,000.

However, only 8-10% of SLHTs are involved in supporting language development in children. Most of them belong to medical facilities and welfare institutions, and there are very few SLHTs that can provide individualized guidance at home that is closely related to daily life.
